In brighter news, the fogs and fall slanting sun have intermixed and leaves are slowly changing. Sheep are sheared in preparation for fall breeding and, for some, fall slaughter. Up the road, the vignerons are about ready to harvest [aside - Blogger doesn't know how to spell "vignerons"]. Walnuts are about ready to fall and acorn squash are ripening fast, although the deer have wreaked havoc on much of the tender acorn squash crop, surprisingly.

Truly St. Paul was right about marriage:
32 But I want you to be without care. He who is unmarried cares for the things of the Lord—how he may please the Lord. 33 But he who is married cares about the things of the world—how he may please his wife. 34 There is a difference between a wife and a virgin. The unmarried woman cares about the things of the Lord, that she may be holy both in body and in spirit. One of the things I miss most about my quarter acre on the edge of town where I lived when I was first married is the walnut harvest, yes, and the pungent but beautiful smell of the walnut tree itself.
Picking up walnuts and separating out those that fell prematurely because of worm infestation from those that came away clean from their husks, drying them in the sun on screen covered racks to keep the moths off, and then storing them in big plastic barrels with lids, for use as a major protein source all winter long.
Ah, Mexican chicken pancakes with walnuts! What a treat!

I think this isn't going to be as fine a year for walnuts as last year, but even a little is a great gift.
